Reuters: Mexico Number One For Retirement!

Thu Sep 20 19:00:56 UTC 2007
NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - Mexico was named on Thursday as the best place in the world to retire by an annual retirement index, replacing last year's winner Panama where real estate prices have soared.
Releasing its 15th annual global retirement index, International Living magazine said Mexico had jumped four places to top the list due to "an affordable combination of modern features and old-world charm."
The report analyzes 29 countries, and gives them scores in categories including real estate, entertainment, special benefits offered to retirees, culture, safety and stability, healthcare, climate, infrastructure and cost of living.
"Moving to Mexico means you can still have all of the amenities you grew accustomed to north of the border: cable TV, high-speed Internet, and modern home appliances," said the magazine's managing editor Laura Sheridan in a statement.
Mexico also won praise for its health care, diverse climate and affordable real estate.
The magazine, which caters for people living and working overseas, said a beachfront property in Mexico could be bought for less than $100,000.
Trailing Mexico were Ecuador, Italy, Panama, Australia, Malta, Spain, South Africa, Malaysia, France and Thailand.
Panama fell to fourth slot due to a dramatic rise in real estate prices, particularly in Panama City, and because the government has recently restricted tourist visas to 30 days, making it harder for seasonal part-timers to live there.
The United States ranked No. 19 in the report, scoring poorly in the area of special benefits for retirees. It scored well in both safety and infrastructure.
The United Kingdom was ranked at the bottom of the list at 29 countries, largely due to its high real estate prices and overall high cost of living.

Mel and Anna Ruth Laite

Mel wrote the following...

I am from Florida, but have lived in Mexico for some 20 years. Anna Ruth is from Merida.

I am a sales manager for Standard Aero Ltd out of Winnipeg, MB, Canada, the world's largest independent aircraft engine overhaul company. I handle Latin American sales.

We live in Merida AND Hunucma. We just built a little place in Huncuma where we spend the weekends. We just completed it last year really learned a lot about self contracting. It was a lot of fun, however Anna Ruth forbids me to take on another building project until after I retire!!!! That will be in about four years.

As far as activity in Sunset Beach, so far I have seen no signs of building. I was out there just this past weekend.

We have had a lot of rain in September, which is great for the shrubs.

Oh, by the way....The ex-shrimp farm is becoming a bit of an issue. The drainage ditches which are now of course stagnate have become an excellent breeding ground for mosquitoes, so you may want to mention that to Guy. I have no idea if there is anything we can do about it, but I thought I would bring it up. Hopefully by the time we get ready to build it will have taken care of itself!

Jodi and Gerry

Our names are Jodi and Gerry and we live in Spruce Grove, Alberta, Canada. In the summer of 2006 we purchased lot # 15. Jodi is a System Software Specialist for one of Canada's best construction companies and Gerry is a teacher.

Our personal goal for the lot is to build within the next four years and live in Mexico for the majority of the time. There are so many things to learn before we get there!

We will be returning in July 2008. We are hoping to search for an architect/builder and to find out as much as possible about building. We have heard there are four owners who might be getting ready to build. It would be great to see someone building next summer!

Updated Information

We talked to Guy Rutland from Trans Carribean in the summer and we found out the following:

- All 63 lots at Sunset Beach have been sold.

- Trans Carribean has a new development a few miles east of Sunset Beach. It will be a gated community called Sunset Shores with 90 lots.

- Trans Carribean also owns the land immediately east of Sunset Beach and they will eventually be selling another 200 lots.

- There are 4 owners who have their final permits to build. All are using different architects. Some may be completed by January or February 2008.

- We asked him about rumors that the shrimp farm might become a golf course. He said that it was just a rumor and that the land would be tied up in the courts for some time.

We are also very lucky to have an owner who lives only 20 minutes from Sunset Beach and he told us the following information:

- Hurrican Dean passed well to the west and they just got a little wind and rain.

- Just a heads up about the proposed airport. According to the Diario de Yucatan, the airport project will still be funded, HOWEVER now there is some uncertainty about where it will be built. The two options are near Hunucma as previously proposed, or between Progreso and Merida near San Ignacio, which is about 7k from Progreso.

- The power poles and meters are in.
